Political Climate Change

Much of the United States was ensnared in a historic "polar vortex" today. The plunging temperatures became so frigid that schools and businesses closed their doors. For those experiencing this severe weather, it is COLD...

Also occurring in a different part of the planet, a scientific expedition vessel, the Akademic Shokalskiy, became lodged in ice off the coast of Antarctica. According to the NY Times, the American icebreaker ship, Polar Star, was called upon to rescue several trapped ships in the area. Ironically, the researchers aboard the Akademic Shokalskiy were studying the effects of global warming.

With so many cold weather related issues, it is easy for doubters of global warming to laugh and point at these examples as humorous contradictions to scientific theory. The doubters may very well be correct. But they may also be wrong.

At the end of the day, the question of whether global warming or climate change exists is irrelevant. We should focus on what needs to be done: People must be good stewards of the environment. Rather than debate the causes of climate change, let's focus on environmental issues we can agree on.
  • Clean drinking water
  • Preserving arable land
  • Clean, breathable air
  • Sustaining our natural resources (including fuel)
The important thing is that we can all agree the environment is worth protecting. The famous American naturalist Henry David Thoreau said, "What is the use of a house if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?"

Protecting the environment is non-partisan. It is OUR job to sustain it.
