Like It, Keep It: The Undelivered Promise of the Affordable Care Act

In 2008, “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan” was a key selling feature for the eventually passed Affordable Care Act. Heck, it was a key selling point during the 2012 elections as well. Now as the law takes effect, individuals across the country who purchase their own insurance realize this is simply not the case.

According to Forbes, more individuals in 3 states have seen their insurance be dropped than have filed for the insurance exchange in all 50 states. Once the employer mandate takes effect, we could potentially see a net loss in those who are insured. This would be devastating.

Either we were intentionally misled or this is one of the largest political miscalculations in generations. Regardless, this aspect of the Affordable Care Act was over-promised, under-delivered, and unacceptable. We have said before, the failure of this law will result in one of the cruelest governmental broken promises to the people who will rely on it the most.

We deserve a better path to better health.
