GOP Dilemma: Conservatives and the Dixiecrat Influence

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is the son of conservative Dixiecrats. He thinks the will of a majority trumps the rights of the minority on the issue of marriage in Arkansas ("States' Rights"). Huckabee writes in HuckPAC that these issues regarding recognition of personal expression should be placed on the ballot. This is not a historical position of the GOP. It seems reminiscent of the Southern Conservative Democrats' perspective during the days of segregation and civil rights protests in the mid-20th century.

Republicans must come to grips that there is a persistent element of historically Southern Democrat values in the GOP. When you hear members of the GOP speak of our "Conservative Principles", make sure they aren't talking about Southern Conservative Democrat principles, which have hijacked our party. Remember, "conservative" principles are not necessarily Republican principles.

BTW, the point of the Judiciary is to ensure the application of laws are legal and just. They provide balance as a co-equal branch of government. Unconstitutional laws cannot stand simply because a majority of an electorate supported it.
