Supporting Gay Marriage should be a Republican Cause

I am a life-long Republican and I support gay marriage. Supporting gay marriage should be a Republican cause because it aligns with the party values of liberty and limited government intrusion into our personal lives.

Gay couples deserve the same treatment the state affords heterosexual couples that decide to bind their lives, property and wealth together in marriage. The recognition of these unions benefits society in encouraging financial and social stability. It is discriminatory to deny married same-sex couples benefits heterosexual couples enjoy. This is a violation of equal rights, which should be repugnant to the Republican Party.

The role of government is not to define marriage. This is up to the individual and their faith. The government should not be in the game of picking sides but to ensure that all marriages that exist are given equal treatment in the eyes of the law.

Therefore, the Republican Party must recognize gay marriage as legitimate legal marriage. Further it must eliminate any verbiage in their party platform that directs marriage be between “one man and one woman.” A party that wishes to represent all Americans must not discriminate against a group of people because of differences in beliefs. If the Republican Party wants to stay true to its ideals they will reverse course on this issue.

If you agree please contact your state and local Republican Party:
